How to Experience the Lake Sonoma Reservoir
What You’ll See and Do
Lake Sonoma is the ultimate outdoor enthusiast’s dream, featuring 50 miles of shoreline and over 2,700 surface acres of water. Here are some of our favorite things to do when you visit this relaxing place!
When you arrive, we recommend visiting the Lake Sonoma Marina, where you can take advantage of boat rentals. Or, if you brought your own, you can launch from here, too! In addition, many of our guests go swimming, canoeing, sailboating, motorboating, and even waterskiing.
If you are an avid fisherman or simply want to try your luck, cast a line from the banks of Lake Sonoma. You’re sure to find peace in nature as you reel in bass, Sacramento perch, catfish, sunfish, and many other species.
You’ll find several networks of trails suited for hikers, bikers, and equestrians of all skill levels surrounding Lake Sonoma. These scenic 40 miles of trails showcase dense woodlands, sweeping meadows, stunning vistas of the lake, and rolling hills. On your journey, you can see a variety of wildlife including deer, rabbits, and rare birds.
Learn About the Area
The Lake Sonoma Visitor Center and Fish Hatchery are located at the front entrance and open year round. At the Milt Brandt Visitor Center, you’ll see a lavish collection of outdoor-oriented exhibits, displays, and programs designed to educate visitors on the natural history of Dry Creek Valley and the past of the Pomo Indians, the valley’s original inhabitants. In addition, you can learn about the fascinating life cycle of coho salmon and steelhead trout at the Don Clausen Fish Hatchery. This establishment was constructed to preserve and enhance the spawning grounds of native fish species.
Each April, the Lake Sonoma 50 takes place. This 50-mile elite marathon is one of the most grueling competitions in Sonoma County. It’s an Altra Golden Ticket event for runners who wish to qualify for the Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile trek in the Western States. From the moment you begin your race, you’re sure to test your will, determination, and perseverance.
