How to Plan a Trip to the Gustafson Winery in Healdsburg

Sitting 1,800 feet above sea level, D. H. Gustafson Family Vineyards is the highest elevation vineyard and winery in Sonoma County, California. Offering incredible 30-mile panoramic views of Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Mt. St Helena, the vineyard’s 87 sprawling acres are truly a sight to behold. Owner Dan Gustafson bought the land back in 2002 and knew that its rich soil and unique climate would produce superb wine grapes. Today, Gustafson Winery produces eleven award-winning varietals just down the street from the Honor Mansion and is the perfect place to experience the very best of wine country.

What You’ll See at Gustafson Winery

The Heritage Tree

When the vineyards at Gustafson Winery were first planted, great care was taken to preserve the area’s old groves of madrone, oak, and redwood trees, including the famous Sonoma County Heritage Tree. This 300-year-old giant has a trunk diameter of eleven feet and is thought to be the largest madrone tree in Sonoma County, and maybe even the entire state of California. Much of the land at Gustafson remains as an ecological preserve and is home to many species of trees and wildlife, including bobcats, rattlesnakes, wild turkeys, red-tailed hawks, and wild boar.

Tasting Rooms

Gustafson’s downtown Tasting Room & Wine Bar is located at 34 North St, across from Shed in Healdsburg. Open daily, guests can enjoy a $10 tasting of limited production Estate wines in the tasting room or wines by the glass in the cozy lounge. Or, visit the Estate Tasting Room at the vineyard, which offers a complimentary tasting on Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM. Feel free to bring lunch to the picnic area overlooking Lake Sonoma and enjoy spectacular scenery, fresh air, and great wine!

The Wine

20 rolling acres of vineyards at Gustafson Winery produce renowned varietals, including Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Rosé of Syrah. These wines are produced exclusively from grapes grown at the vineyard, where volcanic soils produce grapes with smaller berries and more intense flavors. The fruit is fermented for several days, and the wines spend between 18 and 24 months in the barrel for an incredibly smooth and delicious finished product.
